Does The Cylinder Need Oiling?
Mar 17, 2025| 1. Necessity of lubrication
In high temperature, high pressure or frequent working environment, internal friction of the cylinder will cause wear. Lubricating oil can effectively reduce friction coefficient, reduce wear and extend service life. For example:
High temperature and high pressure environment: For example, steam engine cylinders need to use special cylinder oil, whose high viscosity and oxidation resistance can meet the high temperature sealing requirements.
Automation equipment cylinder: Ordinary pneumatic cylinders are automatically lubricated by oil mist spraying. If the movement is frequent, the oil supply of the oil mist sprayer needs to be checked regularly.
2. Precautions for lubrication
Oil selection: Special lubricating oil (such as cylinder oil or equipment specified oil) must be used. Ordinary engine oil or butter may fail due to high temperature oxidation or insufficient viscosity.
Lubrication method:
Oil mist sprayer: It is recommended to install, which can accurately control the oil amount (0.5-5 drops/1000L air) to avoid excessive lubrication.
Manual lubrication: It is only suitable for scenes without oil mist sprayer. It needs to be applied in small amounts and the frequency should not be too high.
3. Special cases where lubrication is not required
Non-lubricated cylinders: Some imported cylinders (such as FESTO) are made of self-lubricating materials or have a high finish design, so no additional oiling is required.
Low-frequency use: If the cylinder does not move frequently (such as occasionally starting), lubrication is not required in the short term, but long-term maintenance is still required.
4. Maintenance recommendations
Regularly check the seal ring and piston rod, and apply anti-rust oil (when it is not used for a long time).
For equipment with piston structures such as air pump cylinder assemblies, lubricating oil must be added regularly to reduce friction.
