Dual Rod Pneumatic Cylinder

Dual Rod Pneumatic Cylinder

CXSW pairs two cylinders in one body to deliver double the output force and 2–3x the permissible load of the standard CXS series, without a larger footprint. Bore Ø6–Ø32mm, built-in 0–10mm stroke adjustment.

Same Footprint, Twice the Force

When an application needs more thrust than a standard thin double-rod cylinder can deliver, the usual fix is a larger bore - which means a larger footprint. CXSW takes a different approach: instead of one cylinder in a bigger body, it pairs two cylinders in the same compact body, so both work together to drive the load.

The result is a direct, quantified upgrade over the standard CXS series at the same bore size: double the output force, and 2–3 times the permissible load. For installations where the footprint is already fixed and the only way to get more thrust is to make the actuator itself stronger - not bigger - that's the specific problem CXSW solves.

CXSW   VS   Standard CXS

Factor Standard CXS CXSW (Dual Cylinder)
Structure Single cylinder Two cylinders in one body
Output force Baseline 2x baseline
Permissible load Baseline 2–3x baseline
Stroke adjustment 0–5 mm 0–10 mm
Bore range Ø6–Ø32 mm Ø6–Ø32 mm
Footprint Compact Same compact footprint

Choose CXSW over standard CXS when the application's thrust or load requirement exceeds what a single-cylinder body can deliver at your target bore size, but there's no room to step up to a larger bore. If your current CXS is already handling the load comfortably, there's no need to pay for the extra capacity CXSW provides.

What the Dual-Cylinder Structure Delivers

  • Stronger side-load resistance, less risk of jamming under radial force. Because two cylinders share the driving load, radial force that could bind or damage a single-cylinder design is distributed more effectively - relevant for clamping and fixture applications where off-axis force is routine.
  • Built-in stroke adjustment, no extra accessories. A 0–10 mm adjustment range is built directly into the cylinder body - twice the adjustment range of standard CXS - letting the final stop position be fine-tuned without sourcing a separate adjustment mechanism.
  • Two bearing options for different precision needs, same as the rest of the CXS family:
Model Code Bearing Type Best Suited For
CXSWM Sliding bearing General automation, cost-effective solution
CXSWL Ball bearing Higher-precision positioning, smoother repeated motion
  • Oil-free operation. No lubrication required under normal conditions, simplifying maintenance across the doubled-cylinder structure.

Precision and Load Data

  • Non-rotating accuracy: ±0.1° across the full Ø6–Ø32 mm bore range.
  • Rod-end deflection under load: ±0.03 mm across the full Ø6–Ø32 mm bore range.
  • Maximum permissible load: varies by bore size and stroke length, with CXSWL (ball bearing) rated somewhat higher than CXSWM (sliding bearing) at the same bore and stroke. Larger bores (Ø25, Ø32) support meaningfully higher loads than smaller bores (Ø6, Ø10) - as expected, load capacity also decreases as stroke length increases within each bore size.

Model Number Guide

 Example: CXSWM20-100

Code Segment Meaning
CXS Thin double-rod cylinder base series
W Dual-cylinder structure (2x output force)
M Guide bearing: sliding bearing (L = ball bearing)
20 Bore diameter: 20 mm
100 Stroke: 100 mm

For strokes beyond the standard table, add the "-XB11" suffix and confirm as a made-to-order length.

Where CXSW Is Typically Used

  • Automation jigs and fixtures - where clamping force needs to exceed what a standard single-cylinder actuator provides, without enlarging the fixture.
  • Material clamping and positioning stations - where side-load resistance under radial force is a recurring failure point for lighter-duty actuators.
  • Packaging equipment - pushing and positioning tasks needing higher thrust within an existing compact machine layout.
  • Small handling manipulators - where both higher load capacity and precise, twist-free positioning matter in a constrained footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does "dual cylinder" mean on the CXSW series?

Two cylinders are built into the same body, working together to drive the load. That's what delivers roughly double the output force and 2–3 times the permissible load of the standard single-cylinder CXS series, at the same bore size and footprint.

  • When should I choose CXSW instead of standard CXS?

When your application's thrust or load requirement exceeds what standard CXS delivers at your target bore, but there's no room to increase the footprint by stepping up to a larger bore. If standard CXS already handles your load comfortably, it's the simpler and more economical choice.

  • What's the difference between CXSWM and CXSWL?

CXSWM uses a sliding bearing guide - cost-effective for general automation. CXSWL uses a ball bearing guide, suited to higher-precision positioning and smoother repeated motion. Both share the same dual-cylinder body and 2x force advantage over standard CXS.

  • How much can the built-in stroke adjuster fine-tune the position?

0 to -10 mm, built directly into the cylinder body - no separate adjustment accessory needed.
